The theatre of all arts and sciences
A journey through the world of ideas, from Europe to Piedmont. Books, manuscripts, engraving and drawings. The humanist and scientific culture that emerges from the many books stored in the three public institutions in Turin that are promoting the exhibition (Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria, Biblioteca Reale and Archivio di Stato – the National University Library, Royal Library and National Archives) is the focus of the exhibition organised in the palace of the Royal Archives.
They were not a handful of valiant adventurers who set sail from Quarto for Marsala, but Italy’s largest ever volunteer army. On the track of approximately thirty-five thousand ‘forgotten’ Garibaldini, who are emerging from anonymity through painstaking research by archivists. A project made possible by the CRT Foundation.
The history (of Italy) in the drawing-room (of Turin)
One of the oldest examples in the Western world of architecture designed specifically for an archive can be admired in Piazza Castello 209. And, what is more, it is still functioning with the same purpose after almost three centuries. Built in 1731, the Archivio di Corte (Court Archive) was designed by Filippo Juvarra: a modern construction in a modern state, with a modern purpose.
The Savoia family traced the history of the dynasty through the link between the past and the present, lasting over one thousand years. Many of the documents that helped to write the family’s glorious past, and supported the political project of the Unification of Italy, are stored in the Historical Museum of the Archivio di Stato. This institution was born almost 150 years ago, and boasts an extraordinary heritage of “glimmers of the history of Piedmont”.
